WORLD’S WEALTHIEST IN PHUKET

Phuket in recent years has become known as the playground of the world’s
rich and famous, attracting pop stars, celebrities, supermodels and
multi-millionaires. According to the Airport Authority of Thailand the
“Pearl of the South” has seen a 20% growth in tourism in 2011 from a
year before with 4.2 million visitors. Phuket currently has more than 200 direct
international flights weekly from major tourist markets in Asia and Europe.

In addition to European visitors, Phuket is seeing growth in tourism from Middle East, up 63.2%
from a year earlier, Asia (up 41%) and Russia (up 14.5%).

WEALTHY CHINESE & RUSSIAN VISITORS

According to a survey by Ctrip.com, China’s leading online booking agency, Hong Kong is the top destination for Chinese travellers, with Phuket second. Considering that Hong Kong is actually part of China, that puts Phuket in top position as an overseas destination for Chinese holidayers.

Russia, meanwhile, is also threatening to overtake Australia as Phuket’s second
prime source of tourists. The severe winter weather in Europe, notably
Eastern Europe, has shaken up many people and spurred a desire to relocate
to safer, better homes. The busiest time is between October and April
when the weather in Europe is really cold.

Knight Frank Thailand also sees an increase in Asian tourists in
Phuket, particularly from Korea, India and Singapore. “For the
Indian market, wedding groups remain an interesting market,
whilst honeymooners from Korea are the dominant force.
Indonesia is a growing potential market with huge opportunities” .
